In 2009, glaciologist Evgeny Podolskiy stumbled on something he’d never seen: soft, feathery fronds of frost called shrimp tails. He left the mountain with photographs and a question: What weather conditions produced the strange formations? Now, with the help of a powerful climate model, he and a team of international scientists have reconstructed how the tails formed.
